9.5 Club

We began the 9.5 Club a few years ago. Our hope as board members is this will continue to be another goal for some of the young athletes across the state. It is way for schools and gymnasts to be recognized statewide.

Please email Lori or Alicia at: loric@mahsgc.com, aliciag@mahsgc.com

with the names of your gymnasts that score a 9.5 or above. Also include

your athletes score, team name, event that he/she received a 9.5 or above on.

New School Records

If you have an athlete or a team that breaks a school record, we’d like to hear about it! Please e-mail: aliciag@mahsgc.com or loric@mahsgc.com with your record breaking news.

Recap of the Annual Coaches Meeting

We recently had our Annual Coaches Meeting. Thank you for all of you that made the trip to Middleton. We appreciate it!

At this meeting, we were told some exciting information about Team States! Tim informed us that the State Team Finals will be hosted in the same venue as the American Cup. The gymnasts will compete up on podium. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for the athletes of Massachusetts.

MIAA will be voting to send an amendment to the tournament committee regarding the girls Individual State Meet. The outcome of the vote will determine if the MIAA will host and run this meet or if we will continue to run the meet. Either way, we will still have an individual meet.

The Senior Showcase will be run this year!! It is going to be February 7th at Yellow Jackets Gymnastics Club in Middleton Massachusetts. This is a fun and exciting meet for all of the high school seniors. Any and every senior gymnast should come and compete. They will all receive a free t-shirt. The high school National coaching staff will be present to scout for a team. They will be looking for the top senior gymnasts in the state. However, scores will not be flashed and all gymnasts are welcome to come celebrate their high school career.

The Coaches Invitational, a JV meet, will be run on 1/25/10. It will be a warm-up-compete format. Each team will consist of six competitors. If you have any JV gymnasts, this is the meet for them to shine. Please e-mail Lisa @ lpmcoach@yahoo.com with your team.

The Seating Meeting will take place on February 8th at MIAA headquarter in Franklin, MA. Every league needs one person to represent them. Make sure your league has someone at this meeting!!

Some of the judges across the state had commented on the coaches’ attire.  Please dress appropriately for regular season competitions and tournaments. Jeans are NOT appropriate for meets. Thanks!

Senior Nationals are a wonderful way to end for a gymnast to end her high school career. I was part of the Massachusetts High School Team years ago and loved it! If you have a gymnast that you think should be considered for the Massachusetts State Team (must be a senior), please e-mail loric@mahsgc.com.

Include her name, level, where they train (club gym if applicable), skill level, why she stands out (even if it is on one event). The Senior National Team will meet 3 times to workout as a team prior to the competition in Ft. Myers Florida.

Each individual high school team can become a member of the National Organization (NHSGA) and get involved in the All-American aspect of it. This can be a great benefit to your gymnasts. There will be a link on the website if you want to apply.

It’s time to pay your dues! It’s is $75.00 and the check should be made out to: HSGC. Please don’t be late. We don’t want to charge you the late fee!

If your check from last year has not been cashed, it’s not going to be. We finally got the books under control J

Judges Corner

There are not a lot of rule changes from last year. Here is a recap of last year’s updates to the rules. Remember that

Simple routines are better. The gymnast only needs 8 elements!

VAULT

Coach may spot the gymnast in the front and in the back of the table. The deduction is 1.0 for the spot in the front and 1.0 for the spot in the back.

·         A gymnast can turn any way he/she wants on a turning vault.

·         Padding is mandatory on both sides of the vaulting table. A zero will be given to a gymnast who performs a vault without padding.

·         Round-off entry vaults can be twisting or flipping.

·         Round-off entry vaults need the manufactured mat NOT a sting mat. Gymnasts that perform the vault with a sting mat will receive a zero.

·         Straddle and squat vaults start at a 7.0. If a gymnast puts his/her feet on the table, his or her start value will be a 6.0.

BARS

·         An extra swing is .3 (This includes and extra pump of the legs)

·         .1 in composition is taken for a gymnast that doesn’t have a turning element in their bar routine (the turning element can not be in a mount or dismount)

·         .1 is taken for any move that doesn’t go to handstand.

·         An incomplete turn on a dismount will receive the same deduction as it does in USA gymnastics.

BEAM

See chart

·         Split jumps and leaps will automatically keep their value unless they go below 135 degrees. A deduction will be taken for the split.

·         2 Superior leaps and jumps DO NOT move to a high superior

FLOOR

See chart

·         A split leap has been devalued from a Superior to a Medium.

·         Split jumps and leaps will automatically keep their value unless they go below 135 degrees. A deduction will be taken for the split.

We would like to welcome all of the new coaches to our association. We hope that every team has great season.

Thanks for your support!
